What is ADHD?

Adults with ADHD or ADD may struggle with everyday tasks such as staying organized, meeting deadlines, managing time, and maintaining focus. These challenges can impact relationships, work performance, and emotional well-being.

Common symptoms in adults may include:

  • Inattention:

  • Difficulty focusing or sustaining attention on tasks

  • Frequently losing items like keys, phones, or paperwork

  • Easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or stimuli

  • Poor attention to detail and frequent careless mistakes

  • Difficulty following through on instructions or finishing projects

  • Hyperactivity and Impulsivity (more common in ADHD than ADD):

  • Feeling restless or unable to relax

  • Talking excessively or interrupting others

  • Acting without thinking or making impulsive decisions

  • Difficulty waiting your turn in conversations or situations

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that can persist into adulthood, even if they were not formally diagnosed in childhood. While ADHD includes symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, ADD is a subtype that primarily involves inattentiveness without the hyperactive behaviors. In adults, these conditions often manifest differently than in children and may be mistaken for stress, anxiety, or mood disorders.

These symptoms can vary in intensity and may be influenced by environment, stress levels, or co-existing conditions such as anxiety or depression. It’s important to note that not all adults with ADHD display hyperactivity, which is why many people with ADD (inattentive type) remain undiagnosed for years.

With proper assessment, diagnosis, and treatment—including therapy, coaching, or medication—adults with ADHD or ADD can manage their symptoms effectively and lead successful, fulfilling lives.

A group of people sit around a wooden table engaged in a discussion, with sheets of paper in front of them marked with diagrams and the words 'Diabetes Advocacy'. There is a bright, natural light coming from a nearby window, and everyone appears focused on sharing ideas, as some take notes with colored markers.
